Media Manager in FCP

Hi John

you’ll probably be better off if you don’t get overly hung up on generational loss due to export.
use Export > Quicktime Movie w/ Make Movie Self-Contained checked, but Recompress All Frames unchecked … that should give you a resulting file just the same as if you had used the original media as per Media Manager.

if for whatever reason you absolutely can not accept the export route then i’d guess your only option is to buy a new media drive and add it to your storage pool

Media Manager doesn’t actually delete the media it creates a duplicate of your project in a specified location, if you select delete unused media it just doesn’t copy over media that is not used.

Double check to make sure you have enough open space on the drive, because like I said it makes a copy of your Final Cut project and used media. Then you can delete the old one.

can’t say i’ve ever tested the lower level functioning of the media manager code, but i rather think that would depend on your settings, as in Copy, Move or Use existing

Once DVCPRO HD material has been imported in FCP, they’re QuickTime files just like any other media. I cannot see any difference in the media manager behavior in this material compared to other material. When I tested it unused media was removed from the project as specified.

I don’t think Apple store employees are the most reliable test bed for pro application issues. By and large, they pretty much have no idea what they’re doing. There are a very few exception in some stores, particularly in LA and the Bay area, but outsdie of that I wouldn’t trust any with a pro apps question.

I dont agree with your opinion of Apple store employees the ones in the store here in Salt Lake Utah are seem to realy know there stuff, but it probably depends on who you ask. You would want to ak the guys at the studio, from what I have been told they actualy have to get certified on the Apple Pro apps to work at the studio.

Your probably just not asking the right one. You cant realy expect all the Apple store employees to know all of the pro apps.

Media Manager has always had the ability to actually delete the unused media from the actual quicktimes and relink, without copying the quicktimes. Quite amazing actually. But quite dangerous. The only time I’ve used it was after a project was done and output. I wanted to keep it on the system for a while, so I did it. It was actually with the very first version of Media Mangaer. It worked. But another time it got fouled up half way through, and I was left with nothing. A fouled project, and half fouled QTs.

I have been consolidating DVCPRO HD for the past week without a problem. I capture a full reel, subclip, then use the copy function to breakdown the media files.

The only time I’ve had a problem is when I’ve imported Dailies pulled from DVD where I forgot to attach a reel or timecode to, in that case it would always retain one file no matter what consolidate settings I would choose.

Hi Nick,
Just wanted to thank you. I followed your suggestions and solved my problem. Capturing directly to a laptop the clips had no timecode or reels. I made the sequence independant and also modified the timecode in the sequence.
