One of my VIP CS5 clients is looking for a media management solution – a SAN or a NAS for three Windows CS5 edit stations and a laptop for ingest and client access.

Is there a 3rd party media management solution for Adobe Premiere? If not, what are the media management best practices for Pr?

The client is looking to be able to ingest and process incoming media, assign it to specific libraries, bins, etc. The edit stations should then be able to easily find and work with this media. Clients should be able to sit down at the laptop, search for and playback desired media.

I keep hearing about media management capabilities in MC 5.x, FCP and FC server – are they really so much more advanced than those in Pr?

Thanks! (and apologies if it’s been covered already)

Adobe Premier uses Bridge as its media management liaison. I would assume, since the client does sound to be doing work at a very professional level, that the ingestion phase includes adding metadata to their media assets.

Bridge is able to browse file structure as well as search by file name and metatag information, and playback video and audio (although exotic codecs seem to be an issue for it).

Premier also has a project manager. The project manager function will take a current project, strip out unneeded files if you choose, then take all of the bin files and copies, renames, condenses them all in one location. Not ideal if you need your files in a very specific disk folder structure but if you have a project that is just a mess with file spread out all over the place, it may be the first step in getting more organized.

Premier also comes with OnLocation, a tool that helps ease media ingestion on-set. It has metadata tools as well as video scopes to help check any camera issues.

My current folder structure is this:
    Job Folder
    -Audio
-Separated by day or data dump
    -Video
-Separated by day or data dump
    -SFX
    -Art Assets
    -Premiere (for project files)
-AE (for After Effects project files)

Does your client currently use any tenured workflow? Or is this going to be an upgrade where they really make that a priority? Without knowing how granular they want their system to be it would be hard for me to recommend the system as a whole, or not.

Thank you so much for your response!

[Angelo Lorenzo] “Does your client currently use any tenured workflow?”

How would you define “tenured workflow”? Bing doesn’t find it, Google points to this thread. 🙂 Is this a workflow where media is acquired for a specific project and can be discarded once completed?

Would you know what are the media management features in FCP, FC Server and MC 5.5 (if any) that don’t exist in Bridge?

Alex, what I mean by tenured is any workflow your client may use now and is tied to by force of habit. Basically, are they trying to find a media management solution to fit their current workflow or are they open to being more flexible and using a solution and tailoring their workflow to that?

The latter. They open to any suggestions and recommendations. It’s a US Army PA center with three busy editors (and video shooters) – and I’ve been impressed with their technical knowledge as well – they want a centralized media repository and archive – and need a few preliminary quotes to submit to their superiors.

If I understand you correctly, there aren’t any 3rd party media management solutions for CS5 and they can do most of the legwork in Br and Pr – so the solution will focus on workflow documentation and training, and of course on the underlying hardware (LAN or SAN) that will be able to handle their needs.

    Thanks Angelo!
