  • Media in Vegas not displaying properly on timeline

Posted by Janet Turner on January 8, 2011 at 3:12 pm

    Hi gurus –

I have been trying to solve this problem ever since I installed Vegas 10.0 but can’t seem to figure it out. I actually have two issues and it makes me wonder if they are related. I am running Vegas 10.0c.

First issue: The media on my timeline shows only a still of the media at the beginning of the event and then maybe another still in the middle (depending on length of clip) and then a final still at the end. Everything else is nothing but a big white bar in between each still. You can see everything just fine in the preview window as you are passing over the white bar. I went back to check things out in Vegas 8 and the media displays correctly in that program.

Second issue: Missing icons in Ultimate S on the toolbar. The program is on the toolbar but the icon is not showing up. The only way you know it is there is when you hover over the blank icon, a balloon comes up saying Ultimate S. Looking in the toolbar menu itself, the icons are not showing up there as well.

I am sorry this is so long but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Any thoughts. This is driving me up the wall.

    First issue:
Options – Prefs – Video – Thumbnails to show in video events
Make sure this option is set to All.

    Second issue:
Wait for John Rofrano to answer this one 🙂

    Mike –

You are the man! It worked. I have no idea how you knew where to find this setting since I don’t recall changing anything when I installed Vegas 10. At any rate, I can finally continue happily editing.

I will wait to hear from John on my other issue since this fix did not resolve that issue.

Again, thank you for your help.

    Janet,
FYI – for a brand new install of Vegas Pro, the thumbnail display format on the timeline you saw is the installation default.

    Cheers for now,

This is a known bug in Vegas that has plauged us for many, many, versions. I would recommend that you simply remove the icon from the toolbar and re-add it. You may have to restart Vegas in between those two tasks so that it refreshes it’s icon cash. I have script icons disappear all the time and they usually come back the next session. Sony is aware of the problem but apparently unable to fix it.

BTW, in Vegas Pro 10, Ultimate S Pro is a dockable window. You can just keep it open in a docking window and access it that way whenever you need it, so there’s no need for the toolbar icon anymore unless you like to close it and re-open it a lot.

    Hi John –

Thank you for taking the time to get back to me. I left a message about this issue on the VASST website so you can delete that if you would like. I have opened and closed Vegas several times without the icons showing up. This last time I shut down the computer completely and now the icons are showing up – not sure for how long but at least they are there now! I assume the instructions for docking Ultimate S is in the manual?

I’m glad it’s working for now. This bug has been in Vegas for quite a while so I suspect it will happen again.

No, you just drag it to a window and dock it like every other window in Vegas. This is standard Windows/Vegas behavior so we didn’t think need needed to teach people how to dock a window.

Just grab the docking dots on left edge and drag into a docking area:

    John –

Thank you again for getting back to me so quickly. I did not see the bars to the left of Ultimate S when I opened the program so I just grabbed the top of the program and managed to dock it that way. I finally have everything working with help from you and Mike.

I now have to change my earlier statement – you two are the men!

You know I think you’re correct. The bars don’t show up until the window is docked so that’s only how to undock it. Simply dragging the title bar will dock it has you have found out (…hey maybe I we should document this) lol.
