Media Composer Still Image Awkwardness
Hi,
I’ve been using an older version of Avid Media Composer (2.something) on a PC for years, so I tought I’m familiar with the still image workflow in Avid. But now (after some years with Final Cut) trying to get to work on MC 5.5 on an IMac, turns out i’m not…
My problem is: I’m trying to put still images into an XDCam HD timeline, but after importing (tried all with all the different resizing, etc. options) and putting it on top of the video tracks, the parts next to the image (which is smaller resolution than the project) is filled with black, and i can’t crop the black parts to make the video visible underneath. What am I doing wrong?

you should try to do a search on this topic, it has been answered several times.
either bring in your still using the Pan and Zoom effect
to maintain original sizeor in your case, you could apply a 3D warp effect and crop to your desired size

thanks for the answer, and sorry for not letting you know in the original post,but of course i have tried searching on this topic, and i found some answers, none of which would work. One of them was pan and zoom.. another one suggested keying, which can be something of a solution, but not perfect. And I still don’t understand why is this happening. Is it some problem in the settings? -
no
this is how Avid brings in stills. based on your project resolution, and with a solid background, unless you have an alpha layer.
that’s why you use P&Z for stills

Ok, it is true.
The problem was, that i did’t apply PnZ as a filler and import the pic inside the effect.
The real problem is, that i try to do a lot of things the Final Cut way (which i have to be honest, seems the logical way).
But still, thanks a lot.

maybe look into getting some FCP to Avid training there are books
maybe videos tooin many cases, its not a good idea to apply FCP logic in Avid
