Hello. I’m new to these boards, but I need some advice.

I want to get into Avid, and this is the Mac I want:

    24 in iMac
    3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM – 2×2 GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive (7200 rpm)
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB GDDR3

Considering everything works swell on this powerbook:

    MacBook Pro 17 in
    2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM – 2x2GB
    200GB Serial ATA @ 7200 rpm

-I’d imagine everything should work fine on the souped up iMac; but I gotta stop imagining and start investing at some point, right?

Avid Media Composer’s system spec page does not list this iMac:

I called Avid and their tech said that they didn’t think it would work. He said that the engineers that test different systems have not tested this iMac configuration.

I know that this system configuration issue is kinda ‘a thing’ with Media Composer that has been noted on lots of reviews. Also, I saw a post here about how the program works on a 20 in 2.16 iMac – but that may be older software…

I guess this is kinda a last ditch effort to see if anyone is using this iMac with Media Composer successfully.

    -Or Advice? -Or Something!

Hey, please help if you can.
    Thanks.

well, concidering i’ve done broadcast video on an 80 Mhz single proc machine with (from memory) 16 Mb of RAM, i would not worry about speed too much…
This system had a whopping 4 gigabyte of storage, so drive size is also no show stopper.

    BUT.
If you want to do serious work, you need a few things:
Either a client monitor and a lot of desktop space, or a dual monitor system. (I refuse to finish if there is no client monitor)

    You NEED external storage.

Some (not all) effects need an approaved graphic board. Some others will work too.
Do NOT want to run Marquee with a non-compatible card, as you will get insane. (default title generator will work just fine!)

IOW, just test with the actual system if you can. Chances are it’ll work just fine for what you want. But if you want to build a business, get a machine that is slightly more expensive but worry free. If you cannot cough up the price difference, forget about being in this market.

I have problems with capturing JVC HDV on Mac version of MC3.0, but other than that, it runs flawless on my 20″ 2,16 GHz iMac (the exact one you specified. Capturing on the same iMac is OK on Bootcamp Windows partition.
