Media Composer First not reading source timecode
Hey yall
Started working with Media Composer First (my knowledge of Media Composer is also limited but I’m an experienced editor). My clips upon import don’t seem to be retaining their source timecode. “Start” timecode is 00:00:00;00 for each clip.
If I import the same clips (Transcoded to Op-atom) into Premiere it reads the source timecode not problem.
I’ve messed with timecode display options to source and it doesn’t seem to be here.
Am I missing a plugin? A key piece of knowledge? A hard drink cause at this point I could use one…

What are your source clips? Going to guess mp4s..A7?

Yep, A7s mp4s is what we started with, transcoded to Op-Atom DNxHD 36.

Because i hate that camera.
Avid does too.
Use either kyno or a videotool shed product to rewrap to quicktime first. Then bring into Avid.
This should give you quicktime.
I believe there is a paid plugin for AMA of the mp4s,but ive never tried it.

A known limitation with Avid’s support of the codec format; no timecode.

Thank you both for responding to this.
I just want to point out that the files i’m importing have already been transcoded – they are MXF, OP1-Atom files, not the original mp4s.
AVID is linking to them seamlessly, but then no timecode. Premiere & Davinci both read the timecode.

How did you transcode the files to OP1a? What codec was used for the MXF?

I’ve had that happen as well. Transcoded in Resolve, shows timecode in Resolve, bring into Avid, and has no timecode.
I would suggest you just rewrap them and start again.

I have seen this behavior before for certain formats when you don’t make a sequence first. Transcoding directly from the Media Pool does not insert the timecode. Highlight your source clips, right-click “create a sequence from selected clips. Transcode the sequence on the deliver page selecting “individual clips”. Create MXF OPAtom or OP1a with DNxHD codec of your choice.
GIve it a try and report back.
