  • “Media Cache Database” on an external drive?

Posted by Brian Thomas on October 24, 2013 at 5:07 pm

I have a two year old 17″ MBP with a 500 GB internal drive. I often do multicam using four or five camcorders and for longish projects the “Media Cache Database” gets very large (250+GB). The result is I’m always having to compromise with what else I have on that drive. I know I could change this for a larger drive but I was wondering if I would get a significant performance hit during multicam editing if I were to allocate the “Media Cache Database” to an external Thunderbolt or USB3 drive? I already have several Thunderbolt and USB3 drives.

I know I could just go ahead and try it but this involves a LOT of data and I’m trying to save time. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

The Short Answer is Yes, you should keep your media cache on a fast external drive. Use TB.

Well thanks for that Kris – I’ll certainly do that for the next project. And I’ll be back with my impressions!

Well that worked very well Kris – saved all the time associated with installing a bigger internal HDD. For the moment I’m using a small Buffalo TB drive but I might experiment by having that database on one of my fast Caldigit USB3 drives but at least I know it’s all possible and I’m going in the right direction. Many thanks!
