Media audio files connect with different INs and OUTs
Posted by Laura Futuro on January 22, 2010 at 11:17 amMedia audio files connect with different INs and OUTs
I’m Working in two final cut stations, Final cut pro 6.04 in both, same OSX in both.
I had the media duplicated in both computers.
In one of them I had the audio “sincked” (.WAV) with the hit on the video.
Than I copy the project to the other station and reconnect with the local files. Final cut give a message that there are clips that corresponds differents reels and TC. And than ONLY the .WAV files are shown with different INs and OUTs.
Don’t know what to do the media it connects its EXACTLY the same!
Some solution???
Thank you very much

January 22, 2010 at 4:20 pmSo IOW, the media is not exactly the same on both computers?
FCP relinks based on filename, timecode/reelname.
If a clip in FCP has an In and Out that is in fact in the QT that you want to link to, it will be fine.
If not, FCP will relink based on relative position of the clip.
(Thus the offset from the inpoint on original clip in the new clip)I suspect this is happening in your case.
What did you do to ‘sink’ the Wave in the QT?
And, is it not possible to give both machines the exact same media?Bouke

January 22, 2010 at 4:36 pmHi there, thank you fofr the response. I had the midia in one computer and I copy it for a external drive and than back to the other computer, so it’s the same media. I tried coping again and it doesn’t work.
To sinc the wavs I just gave a in in the moment a hear the “hit” and sinc with the image, I didn’t connect the two clips, I already tried connecting with the clip, tried connecting with an exported AIFF, tried midia manager, and when it goes to another computer it doesn’t match the time code.
Actually, for example station1 clip1 have one time code and the clip1 in the station2 project have a different time code. BIZARRE it’s like the stations generates differents timecodes for the same clip. But the timecode supposelly was generated in the digital marker at the shooting.
More strange is that this only happens with the AUDIO clips that were recordered separated by the audio technitiais, the other clips, directly from RED or from 5D don’t have this problem.
PLEASE HELP…

January 22, 2010 at 5:02 pmso you’re having trouble with just the .wav files then?
And they are BWF files (thus containing a timestamp)
And you are running different versions of FCP?
Or do you have different setups on both computers?
(one set to DF, other to NDF)
BWF timecode depends on the setup, unlike other forms of timecodeNow here’s the bad news.
Dunno about the latest version, but FCP sucks when it comes to BWF.
Perhaps one machine runs an older version and the code changed in a newer version of FCP…So check your FCP versions, take the PROJECT from one machine to the other to make sure there is no difference in the settings.
If that does not shed some light on the situation, check out Spherico.com and get a copy of BWFtoXML to avoid the madness.Bouke

January 22, 2010 at 5:17 pmThe FCP is the same in both computers, and I did copy the project from one to the other….
I will try the bwf2xml thing.
But if I created an AIF from this wave (different file) put in the final cut and edit, should it work? or the AIFF keeps the metadata from the wav.
I’m using NDFf time line, I’ll try put it in a DF to see if change’s anything.
What about if I export the audio via soundtrack and generate a new one, to you think it might work?
thank you for the tips

January 22, 2010 at 5:27 pmwell, i’m out of ideas now…
Few things to keep in mind, wav can have metadata, AIFF cannot.
So if the sound gets out of sync, it has to do something with the metadata in the .wav files.good luck!
Do come back and post the solution (or workaround)Bouke

January 22, 2010 at 5:39 pmthe BWF2XML doesn’t run in the computer, it says apple script error… maybe it’s because it’s for final cut5? I’m working with 6..
if anybody have more ideas please let me know

January 22, 2010 at 5:44 pmFCP tags audio with the frame rate of whatever easy setup you have set when you import it. In your original project, find the tc rate bin of your audio in the project (you might have to enable the column to view this). FInd it, then in your other computer and project, Open FCP (a new project, not your reconnect project) and then use the same exact frame rate easy setup from the original project. Then quit FCP, now reopen the project you are trying to connect and reconnect.

February 1, 2010 at 2:43 pmI have been attempting to media manage a large documentary (roughly 3 hours of content split into 22 segments) and have had no end to problems with Media Mismanager, especially broadcast waves, though sometimes Quicktimes, too. Original complete project is 14TB, so it would take over 20 drives to redundantly archive everything, so Media Mismanager has to be used. There are other horror stories about Media Mismanager around the Internet.
I’ve tried a variety of solutions to the problem including making a copy of the original file and re-time stamping that (didn’t work).
The only solution I’ve come up with is rather long and convoluted, but seems to work consistently for broadcast wavs. I’m still testing it, but I promise to post full instructions once I’ve got it nailed down. It involves creating new media (wavs) using Final Cut’s export using Quicktime conversion and then re-timestamping the new media. There are a lot more steps (like 12), and I’m still fine-tuning it and trying to find a simpler method, so bear with me.
Mostly I just wanted to let you know that I feel your pain, and have been feeling that pain for several weeks now.
