Media 100 won’t launch
Posted by Matt Short on June 8, 2005 at 10:05 pmJust installed M100ixs8.2.2 under the Tiger OS. When I try to launch I get error 5551. Should I maybe revert back to Panther and reinstall M100 then upgrade the OS? I’ve read below that people aren’t having any trouble with Tiger so I assumed it would install OK. I don’t want to have to go back to Panther if I don’t have to, as I upgraded from OS9 so, I would have to buy it. Any help is appreciated.

June 9, 2005 at 1:46 amI don’t remember reading that Media 100i Ver 8.2.2 was “approved” for Tiger. Media 100 HD Vers 10.1.2 has been “blessed” for use with Tiger (Versions 10.4 and 10.4.1) as well as 10.3.8 and 10.3.9…but not Media 100i.

June 9, 2005 at 6:25 amDid you run the hardware test included with V8.2.2? Did it see the board and pass okay? V8.2.2 *should* run under 10.4, there are some who have tested it successfully-although it is not officially approved by Media 100. So there has to be something wrong with your install. Did you install the latest drivers e.g. for your SCSI card or whatever you are using in your system?

June 9, 2005 at 12:55 pmError number -5551 is not a Media 100 error return code. It maps to the Apple “undefined selector was passed to Gestalt” error. Did the Media 100 software display any additional information with the error. For example file, line number, and error parameters?

June 9, 2005 at 7:17 pmI read about the success others have had with Tiger, that’s why I tried to install it under Tiger. I ran the diagnostics off the install CD and the board checks out fine. The board also shows up in the systems profiler. This was the first time I’ve installed this M100 so, I haven’t even entered the system key yet. When I try to launch it, The M100 window appears for a half second then the error 5551 window comes up. There is no other explanation or anything. As far as the SCSI card, I have an ATTO UL2S which I believe is not compatable with Tiger (it doesn’t show up in the system profiler – even with the latest drivers installed) I just purchased a UL3D to remedy that problem, though.

June 9, 2005 at 7:23 pmIs your non-working SCSI card still in the CPU? If yes, remove it and try to start Media 100 i; maybe the board is causing conflicts there. And I

June 9, 2005 at 7:55 pmI removed the SCSI card but, that didn’t help. Here are the system specs:
G4 1.7ghz (Sonnett upgrade)
Radeoen 9000 AGP graphics card 128mb
1.5gb ram
OSX Tiger
PCI slots (top to bottom) – 1. Lacie FW800 card (also not showing in system profiler) 2. Media 100 P6000 3. open -

June 10, 2005 at 4:34 pmJust a thought: did you try resetting the CPU button on the motherboard – the little red one soldered directly on the circuit board next to the CPU slot? This might be a bit drastic and might cause more problems, but it sounds like you may have one older machine that doesn’t like Tiger …
