May 16, 2005 at 11:16 amBetacamSP is much lower resolution than the digital formats, and basically, anamorphic is lowering horizontal resolution still further, so it could look very soft indeed when played back anamorphically. For instance, the BBC want all their programming that is anamorphic to be delivered on Digital Betacam – they would not accept SP as a delivery format. If you’re going to be getting a DVD in anamorphic made from this video (is this the only delivery method that supports anamorphic at the moment – I don’t thing North America has any anamorphic broadcasts) BetaSP is totally unsuitable to deliver the video as you’ll be adding analogue noise and compression on top of digital noise and compression making a mess. Basically, once video is digital keep it digital and keep it either in the native format or the best format you can. If it started off analogue, don’t go back to analogue as then you’re mixing both digital and analogue generations in such a way as to reduce the video quality quite noticibly. If you started with digital video, best not go back to an analogue format because of the visibly lower resolution of the analogue formats.
