I’ve been a media 100 user for 15 years now. Although I cut on Premiere pro and FCP, media 100 is my fav. I’m running version 2.1 on an ’09 imac without a ntsc view of my work. My legacy 8 system on a macpowerpc is due for retirement. I’m considering another imac27 w/ thunderbolt or 2012 mac pro to replace my legacy system. My question to the media 100 experts is, “what is the most cost effective capture device that is compatible with an Imac for both SD & HD or should I go with an mac pro and install a pci card”? My budget for upgrading is not very high, but it’s obvious I need to make a move to stay competitive. I do a lot of AE projects CS4 so I need to upgrade to CS6 as well. Any suggestions on the best system under $10K? Thanks for any recommendations.

The big question is what kind of sources you need to capture…

I guess that is helpful info…my apologies. SD DVCam mostly. All HD, 2K footage comes from drives, flash drives etc. My big thing is output to ntsc monitor or even HDMI LCD fro media 100.

    Thanks for your response.

Okay, if you want to go digital only, the T-Tap from Aja is your cheapest choice. SDI and HDMI only, and no conversion (HD to SD, for example). If you need a little bit more connections, you should look into the Matrox MXO2 line, with the Thunderbolt option. There you can get nearly every combination of connections you can imagine. An iMac with a MXO2 or T-Tap depending on your needs will be a great editing system.

What’s your take on the new BlackMagic Ultra Studio?

[Jai Dixon] “What’s your take on the new BlackMagic Ultra Studio?”

Would be nice, but as far as I know it is not supported.

Floh…will the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor unit work with Media100. It’s $100 cheaper for the same result?

Just some additional info, the Matrox needs to load different drivers for Media100 and Premier Pro. This means two OS startup drives as the different drivers do not work together.

I do use AE and Media 100 95% of the time. I have one client that works in Premiere Pro

How does that work? I have an ssd and 1tb hhd. Can I install media 100 & matrox drivers and After Effects on ssd with Mountain Loin and then Premiere Pro on HDD with Maverick?

I don’t use Premiere Pro that much and could just keep that on the second system without the Matrox.

    Any advice would be appreciated!
