    Hi All,

I have been noodling around with Big Top, part of the CHUD tools, to look at, amongst other things, CPU activity when I am using my two favourite bits of software.

What I noticed is that when running flat out, neither package seems to go above 25% CPU activity. I have 4 cores, so that seems to imply that it is using all of one processor rather than spreading the load across the 4.

So, firstly, am I reading this right? Secondly, is this expected behaviour? If so, why doesn’t M100 or Boris utilise the power available?

    Any thoughts or observations appreciated!

I only did performance tests with V11.6.3, but there it seems like the system benefits from more CPUs. Things like Rendering of effects, multilayer clip playback and such go up to 600% on our 8Core system.
I heard that OSX 10.5 will even be more clever about the use of multiple CPUs, so probably a Media 100 V12 (or whatever will work with OSX10.5) will even be more efficient on multi-CPU systems.

    Hi Floh,

Well, I downloaded 11.6.3 and Red 4.1.5 and nope, still rendering at 25% and just as slowly, (rendering a title containing an extruded EPS of a logo).

Any ideas as to whether this is a problem with my machine, or set-up, or whether this is to be expected?

Are you using PPC or Intel hardware?

Ah, it might be a RED thing. Just tried rendering a video layer and it cracked along, with usage up to 75%.

    Hi Floh,

    I’m using a Quad 3Ghz Intel.

It’s deffo RED though, just done a test in standalone mode and it still won’t go above 25% with all guns blazing.

What Codec are you using? I’ve used the activity monitor to check my CPU usage and it increases when using more compressed codecs.

    Hi Scott,

DVCPro50 in media100, though as I mentioned it really seems to be a RED issue as Media 100 does go up to 75% when it is doing its own thing.
