We are comping a new 30-minute infomercial. It will be shot to P2 at DVC Pro50 resolution. The entire show will have an animated alpha channel lower third font bar (think swirly translucent video with a logo bug). Occasionally there will be a top font bar and one or two layers of alpha movies above it (think item name and price). Here’s my dilemma.

A test render of the bottom font bar took about 4:40 to render. That trigs out to over 12 minutes of render time per minute of show. I’m just wondering if that’s consistent with other MCA editors using the same hardware. This will be a recurring show so time spent rendering will be extremely important in job costing. Specs follow:

HP 8000, dual 3 gig Xeons
    3 gig of RAM
    Nvidia Quadro FX1100
    XP SP2
    MC Adrenaline v 2.80

You’ll need to do a render in to out to know how long it’ll actually take. When ya push “T” when rendering to see the estimated render time, it estimates based on the frame it is working on at that time. This can be very decieving.
In a nutshell, I have not noticed what I’d call sllow render times with MC or adrenaline. Things like fluidfilm get slow but thats because of the kind od effect it is. Keyed payers have never been a big problem.

Your older HP xw8000 is not qualified to run the latest builds of Avid Software. Upgrading your CPU to an xw8400 or higher will give you better render times. Blue dot effects rely on the CPU horsepower to process a render. Also, download the 2.8.1 patch for PC.
    Hope this helps…

Thanks for the info guys. We’re stuck with this box for a little longer, but she’s been solid. I’m really looking forward to upgrading 🙂
