MBP13 Retina 2560×1600 vs ‘best for retina’ comparison screenshots
I’m probably not the only one thinking about getting the new MBP13 for on the go FCP work.
I currently use a MBA11, which I find excellent but the limited screen res limits general screen real estate in apps like FCP/PS/etc as well as not being able to preview my 1080p footage 100%.
However, I’m not happy to run such a hires screen in apples ‘best for retina’ mode – i.e. basically same 1280×800 resolution as it always was but ‘smoother’, and supported apps choosing where to use the native pixels.
So here is are two screen shots of the same project taken in apple store.
I used QuickRes.app to switch to true native resolution.

Personally I found it very usable – even webpages, etc were no problem at the high res – yes things are tiny but personally I don’t mind.
You can see of course both screenshots are ‘native resolution’ as apple keeps saying – however what is actually displayed is very very different. In the retina default way (as it comes) you get certain screen content rendered 1:1 and certain content rendered 4:1 (retina). With TRUE native its all 1:1
So, stuff like scrubbing through event footage is much much more pleasant imho.
Anyway, its a personal choice – one you don’t get without a 2rd party script or tool like QuickRes.app.
I thought I’d share these to save anyone else having to bother.
Obviously it would be very similar for the 15 retina.

Careful with those 13″ Retinas.
