  • Maximum RS-422 cable length?

Posted by Nick Ryan on January 9, 2007 at 6:12 pm

    Hey all,

We need to run RS-422 from this workstation to the decks across the hall, is there a maximum recommended length for RS-422? I’ve researched a bit on the internet and I’m coming up with widely different numbers.

    Many thanks,

    Nick

The length possible is dependent upon the shielding of the cable and the data rate. Better shielding and a lower data rate will allow longer distances.

A common calculation is that cable length in meters and data signaling rate in bps should not exceel 10 to the 8th.

So for 500 meters the fastest you could send information is 200kilobits per second (with 8 bit groupings, about 25,000 baud rate). If you’re talking to a deck at 9600 (a common speed recently) which is 76.8kilobits per second you could get 1302 meters.

If you’re just going across a hall you should have no problems at all. I have cables going between floors in this building and never had a problem.
