Max project size in PPCS3
Hi, all,
So – how large a project have folks had success with in PPCS3? I ask this because I spent the entire day yesterday attempting to open a project approximately 70MB in size. The project itself contains perhaps 8 hours of digitized footage, plus various and sundry clips from AE, stills, etc.
System: This is a OneBeyond “OctoFlex” 8-virtual processor box (twin CPUs) running WinXP 32-bit with 4 gig hard memory. The project files reside on shared storage over fiber. The project file itself is on the desktop (local.)
What happens is that after the project finally opens (it takes several minutes to do this), almost any attempt to do anything of substance (example: shift-select four clips and move them within the 12-minute timeline) causes the app to abruptly crash. I get no specific error message beyond the “sorry, Premiere has encountered a problem and needs to close.” (This brings to mind all sorts of ripostes – my favorite being “You throw up on my date, and you’re SORRY??” )
Total PF use, according to Task Manager, is in the neighborhood of 1.8 gig.
Another interesting quirk is that the red timeline bar occasionally leaves “trails” as it’s moved around. That and items start to disappear from the pull-down menus (example: File). This has become the indication to me to save and prepare for depth charging. The app will usually crash shortly thereafter. Worse, invoking a Save at this point often doesn’t succeed, so my hard-fought change(s) are lost to the ether.
This seems to happen to us often — projects grow to a certain size and then become all but unmanagable. We’ve had some success by creating a new project and then importing the old one (this seems to clean things up, at least for awhile) but we’re becoming more and more concerned, as the complexity of our projects won’t decrease any time soon.
We have:
*Reformatted the system hard-drive with a squeaky-clean version of XP, and the latest drivers.
*Reinstalled CS3 and performed all the upgrades to v. 3.1.1
*Tried moving the project to local storage (firewire brick.)
I’ve considered:
*Upgrading to Vista to see if increased memory availability helps (but that’s opening another can of worms entirely.)
*Switching out machines (our off-the-shelf HP 8400’s last longer before a crash than does the OneBeyond.)
*Going to my boss in hysterics and demanding we at least TRY XpressPro (drastic, but I used to act in high school – I can throw a fit with the best of ’em.)
Does anyone have any ideas? Anything at all! The situation is hopeless but not yet serious — in another week or so, when things ramp back up again for us, this will become a crisis.
Thanks for plowing through this long post. I appreciate any and all suggestions.
