Max Headroom
Hello everyone. I have lurked this site gaining massive knowledge from all of the wonderful people here at the Cow. I use Vegas Pro 10 for most of my editing needs, though I do have CS5 in the wings waiting to be explored. I like the vegas program for the simplicity. Anyway to my first question…
1. Does anyone remember Max Headroom from the 1980’s?
2. If you do, does anyone know how they did Matt Frewer’s set up? (I know that most of it was plastic suits, contacts and hair) I am interested in the stuttering effects and pitch change that seemed to be done as if in a random programing time.My goal is to do the exact same thing as the “SHOWTIME” Max Headroom interview show (If anybody remembers that) where Max seemingly would be able to interview live guest in a realtime format.
If anyone could point me in a general direction of learning how to do this I would greatly be thankful.

Yes, I remember Max Headroom! And to re-create the editing style I think you just need , well… a lot of patience and time! Though with NLE editors, the task should probably be easier than it was back then!
The stuttering bits? You just need to repeat small selections of frames I guess. But you also might want to insert tiny bits from other parts of ‘Max’ speaking into irrelevant places. Or maybe shoot ‘useless’ stuff solely for this purpose. I seem to remember that’s what they did with Max – have out of context pieces of him dropped in here and there.
Pitch shifting? Can’t remember off-hand if without looking if media clips can be pitch shifted on the time line. But I’m sure you can add a pitch shifting VST to each clip. Could be quite laborious though. Maybe look into using a sampler?

Oh yes I remember-b-b-b him well-will-woll.
Dont do the multiple tiny thingies, it’ll drive you nnnnnutz. Make a short, 1 sec Subclip and drag the end of the Subclip to the right and you’ll get re-re-re-repeats. Now move further into the remainder of the clip and repeat ad naseum. Job done!
The interference is easy using FXs.
The other bit is to “slash” the picture into forms of kaleidoscopic sections.
“Hi, my name is M-M-Max H-Headroom”
It’d take me 10 mins to do a 10 second section.

Thank you very much folks. I seem to remember that the producers “ported” Max Headroom to a live format for Showtime. It was like a David Letterman set up with Max interviewing celebs. I want to know how to do that version for a local version on closed circut viewing around a Junior College. Kind of like doing school anouncments on the video screens live. If I have to do the editing to the extent that were are talking about here…it just wouldn’t be worth it.
