i have a bunch of clips in a corporate piece that i’m cropping and masking then adding borders as well. i figured there must be a slightly more efficient way of doing it than how i am now in FCP. here is what i do:

    – drop clip onto timeline
    – set composite mode for clip to “travel matte – luma”
    – put mask under clip
    – scoot, crop, resize clip to fit in mask
    – add a solid colored object the same shape as the mask under the mask and resize it slightly larger so it will be a border around the masked clip
    – nest all three layers

    any idears?

    thanks again!

Get yourself an app like Combustion. Its still gonna be time-consuming however.

So meanwhile, has ATI sendt your x800 XT card back? Does it work now?

Thanks for the Combustion tip, and WOW do you ever have a good memory! Thanks for aksing about my card. No, they have sent it back, and communication with them is not good at all. I did get confirmation that they received it on May 8, and they said it might take 6-8 weeks to get it back to me! That doesn’t seem very “average” for the industry, does it? Is this worth a serious complaint to the company??? In the meantime, I’m limping along with my GeForce FX 5200. What ever became of your situtation? I forgot, had you sent yours in?

    thanks again!

Yes, I have a memory like a steel trap. Nothing gets out ever…

I didn’t send my card in cuz I was waiting to see your results. Sounds like I may not live long enough for that the way things are going at ATI…

Ya, it could be true…but i’m just so glad i kept ye olde caarde here so i could do some work. I had no idea it would take this long, though. I’ll keep you posted as to when I finally get it and how it works.

    thanks again!

the nesting thing works, but is kind of cumbersome when there are lots of clips to do this to. i thought of making a drop zone template in Motion to use in FCP, but the template has to be the same length as the video clip. i tried making a single frame Motion template with a drop zone, but that doesn’t work at all.

it seems like with the software i have (FCS 2), my two options are:

    – nesting as in the OP, or if i don’t nest, i have 3 layers on my timeline just for one clip (clip, round-cornered matte, white border))

    – bring all clips into Motion, drop them in, send them back to Motion…

…or try Combustion like David suggested. how do you guys like Combustion?

    thanks again!
