  • Matte not working correctly??

I am trying to get a background to show through a text. The text has some red, and black all around it. When I put the text layer on top and the compositing mode to screen, the background merely mixes with the text.

I just want the words to be solid, and the background show through the black. I have been trying different composite modes, and nothing is working right. What am I doing wrong?

    Norman,

It may seem backward, but the image for a text matte goes on top in FCP. Totally different from say, After Effects. Set the image clip to travel matte luma.

    Have a wonderful day.

Yeah, I always put the clip on top, but that doesn’t help. I even tried matte luma with no change.

The only thing I can think of is that someone gave the text as a picture, so maybe there was some color effect that has made the matte weird.

I added the extract effect to the picture, and that actually made it almost perfect. It was a weird few hours before I found that though.

You don’t use Travel Matte Luma when you are working with text, you use Travel Matte Alpha for cleaner edges.

    V3 Matte
    V2 Fill
    V1 Background

Apply the mode to the matte on V3. Simple as that.

A color effect that has “made the matte weird” does not sound right. The text must have an alpha channel for this to work. So the text must come from within FCP or something like Photoshop for travel matte alpha to work.
