  • Matching different frame rates in FCP with audio sounding normal

Posted by Mike Jacobson on February 14, 2011 at 9:45 pm

I have the pleasure of having to edit a 3 camera interview where all the cameras are on different frame rates. One was shot at 30fps, another at 30.97 (yes you read that correctly) and lastly at 25fps. The problem is I NEED to have the audio sound normal. I would like to make everything 30fps because I have b-roll clips I will need to insert into the time-line as well. I would like to use multi-cam while editing these 3 camera angles so can anyone help me get these clips to match up and sound good too????
    Thank you,
    Mike

Why on earth was a multi-camera shoot done with cameras that shoot different frame rates? Why do people shoot first and ask questions later? Frame rate conversion isn’t a simple “oh, just do this” kind of a thing. Not if you want things to match up properly, look right, and be in sync.

Poor planning on one end means a BIG headache on another.

Right, nobody asked about this before hand and I was just handed the project. It is MY big headache. I think I’ve managed to get it working through a preset I created in Compressor however. We shall see after the hours of trans-coding the footage.

    They never do ask… sigh.

Don’t do TONS of compressing. COmpress small tests and see how things work. If they do, THEN do the tons and tons of compressing.

How horrid would it be if after days of compressing, you find it doesn’t work?
