  • Matching a still image to video – Onion skin?

Posted by Josh Haggard on April 1, 2010 at 4:43 pm

I have a still image of a table that I want to match up with a table in a shoot i am doing.

Is there anyway to overlay the image on to a live video feed before I start recording, so I can get the shot set up correctly.

I think i might be able to use an animation program like iStopMotion, which has onion skinning built in, but i’d prefer to do it all in FCP if possible.

    Thanks,
    JH

In FCP, no. Maybe in Conduit Live, Scope Box or Veescope. Or you could use something like a Tricaster.

It’d be a bit of a pain, but you could put the still on V1, record a short video clip & put it on V2 with 30-50% opacity. Of course you couldn’t do it in real time. Another thought (if you have a Kona card) is to use the DS Keyer in the Control Panel to key your photo (prepared first to have 30-50% opacity) over the live video. I’m not sure if that would work, but it’d be worth a test if you have the Kona.
