  • Matching a solid color then adjusting opacity

Posted by Stu William on August 4, 2023 at 5:46 am

    Hi all,

I’m trying to recreate this logo in AE (see attached). The original has two color shapes in pink and blue and then the opacity has been lowered. When the two shapes overlap the new purple color is created.

My question is, is there a way to know the original solid color Hex code so I can then match the opacity and overlap the shapes so it’s correct to the original?

    Thanks

    Stu

the way i would maybe try it, would be to animate the two shapes as you like, then make copys of them and make a matte for the intersecting part, then lay that on top, this way you have control of all three elements.

You would need access to the original file that was used to create the logo, if you don’t already have it. Then just open up the file in illustrator and all the information will be there.

I think the easiest solution is to take the two colors, combine them with a multiply, and add a “change to color” effect, to transform Hue, Lightness and Saturation of the resulting multiply-mix to the exact mix of the example.

Because the way the two colors combine is depending on extra factors such as Gamma, color space,… and it’s a fair assumption that the original design actually fine-tuned the intersection color anyway and there’s no exact formula where A+B=C.

For one thing, the mix color has less red than either of the two colors, so it can’t be reached by opacity alone.
