  • Masks – why does it move with layer

Whatever I try I can’t separate the mask from the layer I apply it to. I drew a shape and wanted it to appear from behind a mask – as in I wanted the shape to be moving and appear from behind the static mask I applied to the shape layer. Yet wherever I move the mask, or the shape, the other goes with it? Why can’t I move them independently – this is driving me crazy

    Any help much appreciated

Shape layers and text layers work differently than other layers in AE. Create a solid above your shape layer, mask it, then change the track matte of the shape layer to alpha matte and animate the shape layer.
