  • Masking Dead Pixels?

Posted by Doug Broomfield on August 13, 2006 at 2:19 pm

Has anyone successfully masked dead camera pixels with some type of moving mask? I have a dead pixel in a primary camera that is right in the middle of someone’s face. Any suggestions on how After Effects could be used to eliminate the dead pixel by creating some type of mask that would interplolate the pixels around it and thereby eliminate it – or other ideas.

    Thanks so much.

Why not just copy the movie layer or comp on the top and add a mask to the this layer which hides everything except the pixels at one side of the dead pixel (lets say 2 pixel on the right of the dead pixel) and then move this layer so it hides the dead pixel (in this case 2 pixel to left side)

sorry my english isnt that good. If you didnt understand it, just say so and I’ll try it a second time.

Yep, that’s how I’d do it.

If you have 5 dead pixels, make a matte representing those 5 pixels, then place a dupe of the movie below it. Move the dupe 1 pixel to the left or right, and set its alpha matte (or luma, depending on how you made the pixel matte) to the pixel matte above.

You’ll see those 5 pixels twice (beside themselves), but it’s better than dead pixels.

    Recap of layers:
    -top: pixel matte
-middle: dupe of movie moved one pixel (using top layer as its matte)
    -bottom: movie
