Masking a Person From Background
I’m trying to mask/isolate a person from the background and put a moving shot background behind him. No green screen. Slight camera movement but very slight. I cannot use a difference matte because I don’t have a frame of the shot without the person in the shot.
I have no experience with masks or mattes.
I’d settle for simply finding a way to cut out this person, feathering the edges a bit, so the matte would not have to be exact on every curve.
But, it would seem to a novice like me that if you can create a near mask or an inverted matte in the color corrector filter using the limit functions (by using saturation, luminance, etc.) to isolate parts of your subject) to color correct, then you should be able to do something similar with luminance, etc. to create a mask of your subject and isolate him from his surrounding.
How do I do this? And if I can’t do this, what tool can I use to cut out the person and then feather the edges slightly? If you can point me to a tutorial, that would be great, because I need instruction.

This seems to be a job for a compositing app. FCP will be nothing but trouble. There is a great plug-in called Mocha that makes rotos and masks very easy to accomplish. A bit of a learning curve but great results at the end.

It looks like a solution, but unfortunately, I may be under time pressure to attempt to learn it in time, but thanks for the tip.
Isn’t there a way to use a pen tool in FCP to cut around the subject, and is that done in the canvas or viewer, in order to create a mask of some kind that will isolate the subject from the background? I realize it may not be clean, but if I had the ability to feather the edges of the mask/matte, it may suit my needs and turnaround time?
