  • Masking a Pattern without having the base shape cutted

    Hey,

I would like to know it there is a way to mask a pattern without having to cut the edges. Let’s say I have a hexagonal pattern grid on a shape layer created with a single hexagon and the repeater function. Now I want to make these Hexagons to display a specific logo type. Can I somehow make the pattern use a luma matte to be displayed or being hidden? By that I don’t mean the normal luma matte, because that would cause some of my hexagons to be cutted at the edge. I want to have a single instance to have two options, being displayed or not.

I already know about the “sampleImage” expression, but since I want the grid to be very tiny I would have too many instances and this would cause my Computer to crash

What I like about the “sampleImage” Expression is that I have perfect control about whats displayed and how I can use it to also make a revealing animation.

Is there any workaround? Or does anyone know How I could improve my computers performance to work with very tiny patterns with a lot of instances ?

    Thanks in Advance!

I would use Trapcode Form. Hexagonal pattern is a bit challenging, as you need every other row to be shifted, so you need two layers with Form and two slightly offset copies of the layer map that controls the transparency. But you can definitely do it there, plus you will have 3D particles to play with.

This is brilliant, easy and very performant. Thank you for the hint…! 🙂

PS. You’ll need to curve the alpha channel so that there are no semitransparent particles at the edges.
