Managing P2 files in Premiere projects
Hi, this is my first post – please be gentle.
I just purchased a Panasonic HVX-200 and am still running test footage to both P2 cards and the Firestore. I am editing on a WinXP system with CS3 and the Matrox Axio. Imported video files are structured differently depending on the source (P2 vs FS), but in both cases they have default names rather than logical names I’m used to using when logging tape.
So the big question is: Who has a workflow figured out that can give the clips logical names for the current project and for archiving to make future retrieval easier?
I should say that we don’t have a good archival system figured out yet either, but will probably start with Blu-Ray data discs.

I’m curious as to P2 workflow as well.
I can offer a possibility for archiving: Companies are now making USB/FW external drives with dual 500 GB discs, giving one the option of running the unit as a mirrored (RAID 1) set. Very reasonable cost/GB– I just purchased one for about US$300.
You may feel more comfortable with optical media, however.

Thanks for the reply. Each of our editing stations has a RAID, from 3TB to 6TB, but we need to look ahead to archiving away from the systems for access (by other systems) and as part of our disaster recovery plan. The company isn’t comfortable with drives for long-term storage (and I tend to agree) so we are looking at other options. One is a Blu-Ray jukebox that seems good but REALLY expensive.
Are you working with P2 and if so what are you doing for clip management and naming conventions?

Not yet working with P2; I do a fair amount of FX/greenscreen work, so was looking to test a P2 camera in the coming weeks. I just did one job that originated on Sony’s HDX format, and wanted to compare the two.
