April 17, 2013 at 1:09 pmHey Steve,
We made the switch whole hog into Premiere Pro after 11 years of FCP back in June of last year. I believe many of your questions and concerns are answered in a Workflow blog I wrote back in December.
https://www.biscardicreative.com/blog/2012/12/workflow-update-imac-adobe-and-the-x-factor/
The biggest thing for me was to accept that we could just work natively, there is absolutely no need to log and transcode any longer unless you really want to. Our efficiency jumped up exponentially when we just went native and even the clients noticed how much quicker we were able to turn around jobs. Or on the flip side, we could spend more time on the creative since we were spending less time on the ingest.
Take at a look at the blog and if there’s anything else beyond that, let me know, glad to help you make the switch.

April 17, 2013 at 1:33 pmThanks Walter. I remember you testing a bunch of different NLE’s when FCPX first came out.
I thought I read in a thread or blog of yours that you decided to go with something else rather than Premier.
I will read thru the blog you put in the post.
Steve.

April 17, 2013 at 1:52 pmSteve, the only time folks still consider transcoding is when their computer has issues with a certain codec that really taxes their computer. This might be due to an older computer (CPUs), slow raid storage or some other systemic factor. Most people dont have these issues.

We originally chose Avid Media Composer 6 but found multiple deficiencies in that version of the application that did not work with our workflow. I documented the entire experience right here on the Cow in this article.

We then switched to Adobe Premiere Pro and while the ride has not been without bumps, it’s been a very good transition for the entire team.

You might also transcode upfront if you’re going to be finishing on a system that doesn’t support camera-native media.
With Premiere Pro Next’s improved smart rendering, transcoding upfront and rendering as you go may be preferable to some used to the FCP7 output workflow.
That said, working natively works nicely. It effectively moves your transcode to output instead of ingest, so you don’t waste time transcoding footage you won’t use in the edit.
Isn’t it nice having options in your workflow?

April 17, 2013 at 2:32 pmThanks again everyone.
There is not transistion from NLE to NLE that is going to go flawlessly, but this seems pretty smooth and I think we can deal with most of it.Steve.
