  • Making strokes scale with vector paths

Posted by Crossbrand on January 26, 2007 at 5:53 pm

    Here is the thing
I have a path that I stroked. I now wont to truck (zoom in) on the path with a camera so I set the layer switch for vector layer: continuously rasterize. When I truck in the stroke doesn’t scale right with the path. The Stroke doesn’t pixelate and it still outlines the object unless you pre-comp then it doesn’t scale at all. I have read other posts and stuff and I understand why the first part is happening but I don’t like it. So I guess what I am asking is: is there any way to make the stroke scale like a vector?

Thanks for any help and God bless.

Do you mean AE’s internal Stroke effect or a stroke from Illustrator on the vector graphic? in the first case you could add some expression that remaps the radius according to the distance of the camera to the layer. In the second case you may consider converting the contours to fileld paths in Illustrator (extract/split contours).

Thanks for the quick responses guys.
I made about 20 paths in Illustrator and then copied them into after effects and stroked them with AE’s stroke.

The first thing I tried was to animate the size of the strokes. I used expressions to link the different stroke sizes to sliders on a null so that every path that was stroked for instance 4px could be changed by one slider and so on. That works ok except if I nest the comp that contains the strokes then use a camera the strokes don’t scale they just get thicker. If I don’t use a camera and just scale the nested comp it works but I would like to use the camera. If I don’t pre-comp and just put the camera in the same comp as the layers with strokes and animate the size of the strokes it works but I need to be able to nest the comp.

Adding expressions to remap the radius according to the distance of the camera to the layer sounds good and I thought about that but I don’t know how to write it.

    Thanks again.
