There have been unprecedented conversations taking place online, in the press, and in person about professional video editing during the last couple of weeks. And the discussion has been both passionate and personal, because this is about your livelihood.

For Avid, making great video and audio products to serve the needs of professionals – top editors, whether for film, theatrical, television, broadcasters, major film and music studios, or independent film producers is our lifeblood. You can depend on us to be thinking about your needs first.

Over the last few years you have helped us double down on our efforts to improve our products with the features and reliability you need for great story telling – we have been led there by you. Whether you’re working independently or collaborating with others, Avid wants you to know we are going to be there to help make you successful.

We are listening. And one of the things you have clearly said is that you want Media Composer to be more accessible. In response to your feedback, we are extending the cross-grade to Media Composer – through September Final Cut Pro (excluding FCP X) users can get Media Composer 5.5 at the promotional price of $995 USD. You can order the cross-grade as of next Tuesday, July 5th. But I encourage you to download the free 30 day Media Composer right away, to get acquainted with its capability. Check it out: https://www.avid.com/mediacomposersoftware.

We have also heard many of you ask to know more about our strategy and we want to hear more from you. To get started, Kirk Arnold and I are planning to be in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 13 for an event (stay tuned for details coming soon), to meet with you, listen to you and talk about Avid’s ongoing commitment to professional editors (and to give you a glimpse of what’s ahead). Hold the date and plan to join us.

    Gary,

I’m an old avid guy who started his own business over 11 years ago based on the affordability of FCP. I really appreciate what you are saying here and the extension of the crossgrade. I’m obviously very concerned about the future of FCP but more concerned about continuing my reliance on a company that I fear does not “get” the pro market.

You have a historic opportunity here with many users that feel like I do. I own a small facility and changing NLE systems will be a huge deal. I have 5 systems running FCP all based on Kona or Decklink cards. Knowing if support for this hardware is coming would make this decision a no brainer for me and for many more owners, operators and editors like me.

    Thanks

Thanks Gary. Eventhough I’ve been using FCP for a very long time I started and learned on Avid. Since the future of FCP is a mystery (but it’s pretty evident where it’s heading) I decided to relearn Avid and I was stressing about having to plop down $2500 for software, you just made my day!

    Thanks Again.

This post just got you 7 more seats of 5.5 from my company. Thank you for this sale-price extension, thank you for being sensitive to our community’s needs and thank you, perhaps most of all, for listening.

As an aside: I downloaded the trial last week after a decade-plus away and I was shocked by the improvements. So much so, that I ordered a full version bundled with the AJA i/o Express and will be doing my next TVC project on it, starting today.

I’m thrilled by what I’m seeing within Media Composer and I’m looking forward to learning more about where it’s headed. So much so, that I’m contemplating flying out to L.A. for your event Gary.

    Gary,

Have you posted directly in the FCP X forum? There is at least one official Adobe rep who is doing so, and the FCP folks are quite appreciative of his presence. I’m looking forward to your Los Angeles appearance. Unfortunately, I’m working on the Sony lot in Culver City, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it or not. Later is better 😉
