    Hello all,

I have an FCP SD 720×486 project that was edited at 29.97 fpc and could use some pointers to get the best DVD out of it.

I used Encore for my first test and I was happy with the result except for issues in which I noticed interlacing on certain movements. I also noticed that it took my file and changed it to 720×480 (rather than 720×486, and I could not seem to change it.

    So here are some questions…

Should I use Encore or DVD Studio?
Should I upconvert the footage to 16:9 or de-interlace it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

DVD is an interlaced format which is 720×480 only (NTSC)

Did you match the field order in the encoder? You will see interlacing since that’s what you are dealing with

Thanks for your reply. Yes I left it at lower field. So does that mean my best option is to leave it as is?

If your source is lower field…yes. What kind of source are you dealing with? Its interlaced….yes?

I believe so. It was shot on a panasonic p2 camera (I think-this was before me). And the sequence settings are 720×486 at 29.97 fps with the field dominance set to lower (which to my understanding is interlaced), is that correct? Thanks again.

Woops…One more question, while I understand 720×480 is standard for DVD and NTSC, does this mean that my video was “squished” or distorted by 6 pixels if my source file was 720×486?

I used the standard 29.97 preset which I believe is why encore didn’t allow me to change it to 720×486 when I originally tried…

Or is it that encore and/or any DVD authoring program preserves the dimension ratio?

Thats a good question…. a good encoder will crop 3 lines from top and bottom. But some may just squish the image. Your best work flow is to crop it yourself.

    DVD is 720×480 Only

Hmm, I did some searching around I came across someone saying that it does just that as long as it’s CS5 or older, which in my case it is.
