make subclip via mouse?
Posted by Jiri Fiala on March 27, 2009 at 8:23 pmHi, is there a way in FCP to create subclip using a mouse? I don`t like that CMD-U makes subclip in the root level of a project. That way I have to always cmd-u, (rename) and drag new clips to appropriate folders. In Premiere for example, I can make subclip simply by dragging from source window to browser. Is there a similar way in FCP that evades me?

March 27, 2009 at 8:25 pmYou can make subclips from markers… the marker then can be dragged from the clip in the browser and instantly create a subclip from that marker to the next…

March 27, 2009 at 8:28 pmYou really need to learn how to work with this application rather than trying to make it work like some other application you used.

March 27, 2009 at 8:30 pmIt’s fast too! Just play double or triple speed, type m each place you want a new subclip to start. Open the disclosure triangle next to the clip in the Browser, and reveal the markers. Drag a marker anywhere ya want in the browser to create the subclip.

March 27, 2009 at 8:33 pmI know, that`s the classic answer to everything (no offense of course 🙂 It`s just that the Premiere way makes a lot of sense. I also hate being forced to switch from timeline back to source every time I make an edit. Oh well, no editing app is perfect.

March 27, 2009 at 8:50 pmFrom timeline? You don’ really mean timeline do you? You’re not marking in and out points in the timeline and making a subclips of that with Cmd-U, are you?

Tom

March 27, 2009 at 9:50 pmYou can add a button to the viewer window. Under Tools choose Button List. Twirl the triangle next to Modify Menu. Drag “make subclip” to the upper right corner of the viewer.
Now open a clip in the viewer, mark and in and out, and click that make subclip button, and you didn’t have to use Command-U. You used a mouse to make a subclip.

March 27, 2009 at 10:20 pmNo I`m not making subclips from timeline 🙂 What I meant was a completely different issue – having got to press Q every frikkin time I make an edit to timeline from source monitor.

March 27, 2009 at 10:23 pmSteven, I meant using mouse as in dragging from source monitor to Browser. That`s the way Premiere does it and I think it makes sense. You can drag this to whatever bin you have, whereas in FCP, subclip is always created in root level of folders. It`s just a tiny detail of course, but editing app makers should really copy more from each other 🙂

March 27, 2009 at 10:26 pmDrag the clip to the edit overlay and it will leave the viewer the active window, but what’s this got to do with making subclips?

March 27, 2009 at 10:29 pmYou can drag a clip to any bin you want. They’re not subclips though. A subclip always goes into the bin it came from. If you’re splitting up a shot and you want its subclips in a specific bin, move or copy the clip there and make the subclips. What format are you working in BTW?
All the best,
Tom
