  • Make a rat talk? – How do you do it?

Got a short story in development where the main character will be a live rat. It only has a couple of lines. Anyone have any suggestions to make this happen? Wondering if you can use the audio keyframes to add an expression to a selected area…his mouth?

    Thanks

You might want to look into the Dr. Doolittle DVD making. what they did was motion tracked the face and made the animation seperately.

There was a discussion here a little while ago about using time remapping controlled by an expression.

I think you could get a shot of the rat’s mouth open and one of it closed, then use the audio-to-keyframes feature to create a set of time remapping keyframes to sync up the rat to the voice. Unfortunately i can’t help you with the expressions bit, but maybe a search here would find you the answer.

    Good luck

You can always try the Mr. Ed method…

Give the animal a bit of peanut butter to smack its lips on…
That’s what they did for the horse on the Mr Ed show…They smeared a bit of peanut butter on his bridle & bit and let him try to lick it to get get his lips to move..
    –Very low tech idea–

For more control I would go with the time-remapping & expression
…or if you have time and $$, for complete & total control go the 3D animation route…

    Just my two cents…
