  • make 8mm film scratches from white to black???

Posted by Julius Valentinas on November 30, 2011 at 3:46 pm

Hi, I have some scanned 8mm film, the scratches are white and I wonder is it possible to make them black, that would allow further post processing in removing them. Also black seems less distracting to the eyes.

Perhaps there is virtualdub filer etc.

    Thank you.

I have had the same question in the past. I have transferred thousands of feet of 8mm film and in the end I decided that great color correction goes along way. Anything more detailed seems to take more time than it is worth.
( I also find it odd you have white scratches, usually they are black)

I will check back to see if anyone knows of a plugin, but it has been my experience that all the plugins make perfectly good video look like 8mm film not the other way around.

If you’re talking about straight-line scratches, you could use the CC Simple Wire Removal effect to remove them.

Since FilmFix for AE By RedGiant is no longer available,
I’d recommend you to take a look at Freddy’s Van de Putte vimeo page
    https://vimeo.com/user678523

    scripts and more here:

Freddy Van de Putte is a master of scanning and cleaning up 8mm film using the freeware
    AviSynth Application.
Freddy also wrote the most powerful scripts for AviSynth so he gets excellent results!

But If you have a strong budget and you don’t want to spend your time on AviSynth,
there is the Foundry plugin Suite for Nuke / shake /Autodesk /fusion.
