September 1, 2012 at 4:12 pmPeter, its good to hear you are are such a positive experience with such a large long form project. I know in the past there have been issues and concerns with something that big.

September 3, 2012 at 3:27 amHi Peter,
I’m working on a feature length doc (I have footage from over 100 shoot days), and I’m trying to figure out a good workflow for logging/tagging and editing. I create a project for each shoot date where I will log/sync footage from that day, but then also sometimes I play around and edit footage together (into sequences saved with that day’s project).
Then I experimented with creating a “master project,” importing the 100+ daily project files. No duplicate master clips yet, and I retain the keywords I’ve assigned to clips from whatever particular day (INCLUDING Merged Clips, which is huge).
The goal is to be able to search through my footage in the master project by using (among other things) keywords and logging info, and begin editing my scenes together using footage from over the 100 days.
Unfortunately this master project crashes all the time, and also takes forever to save. I’m running a 2008 Mac Pro with 14GB of RAM… nothing special.
I’m wondering whether you organized your footage into such a large project file (that your PC had no problem with).
Unrelated, I looked into Prelude but it doesn’t work with my workflow… I’m syncing using Pluraleyes and creating Merged Clips. I add metadata in Premiere…

September 5, 2012 at 2:12 amTodd, if you work with XDCAM material, be sure to get the Calibrated software codecs. Our Dell Windows box won’t read the XDCAM quicktimes natively. Yes, we get footage that’s been converted from raw XDCAM to Quicktime and the PC won’t read it natively.
We’ve also had issues when folks send us AVC-Intra Quicktime. Again, Calibrated has the solution.
Otherwise, the PC has been a wonderful machine. I recently wrote a review for the Cow on the ProMAX HERO One machine. A beast of a 16 core machine that I really hated to send back to the company.
I’m glad we’re in a situation where we can work PC and Mac side by side. Seems to be the best solution for us as the Macs definitely work better with QTs than the PC so we can just move the projects around to the machine that does the job best.

September 5, 2012 at 3:43 amHello Cyrus,
I have all the clips in one master project. We use Prelude to log the shots and have a system for renaming the clips based on who is in them and where they are then add comments (which can have duration) where appropriate. Prelude has a send to Premiere function which will add it to the open project. Then when we are looking for shots with a certain character or location we can search for that. I have the comments tab open so clicking on a shot loads the comments into that tab and then clicking on a comment takes you to that point in the clip in the viewer. Seems to be working well so far. Project is stable although I have a pretty good machine (Z820 16×3.1GHz core, 64GB Ram etc). My footage all comes off EX cams and F3’s (same codec) so no syncing involved and just editing off the native files. Can take a bit to load when I first open it but once it has it runs fine.

September 6, 2012 at 7:06 pmI did get the calibrated software after some research (and then some mumbling and grumbling). I haven’t had many issues at all with the switch. I do like Premiere. Although I’m having this weird sync issue. About half the time when I start to view a commercial i’m working on, the audio starts first then about a second later the video starts. The next time I do it, no problem.

September 6, 2012 at 8:27 pmTodd, make sure your graphics card driver are up to date. Is this lag seen on the computer screen or an external monitor using AJA or other hardware?

If you’re using a third party video card like AJA / BMD check the plug-ins and drivers. AJA has been making some great strides especially in the audio sync department.

Cinema 4d r12”Todd, my production company is going through the exact same thing you just did….switching from Mac/FCP to PC/CS6. We will be purchasing our new system in October. If you don’t mind, I’d love to get some advice based on your experience.
– How is the Dell T7600 working for you? Have you noticed any pros/cons to the machine? I’m currently looking between the HP Z820 or the Dell T7600.
– I’m looking at using the Quadro 5000 + Tesla c2075. How is the Premiere performance working for you with the Quadro 2000 + Telsa so far?
– What other specs are you running on your system…Ram, Boot Drive, Storage, etc? Thanks so much!
