Not just FCP to Premiere but Mac to PC. I’m in the process of making everything speak to each other now and it’s been relatively easy. Switching from FCP to Premiere has been easier than I thought.

I kind of shocked myself when I started looking in the PC direction, as I’ve been on a Mac now for the majority of my editing career. I’ve worked with both PC and Mac and I still prefer the Mac OS, but am very comfortable with Windows.

With the software it basically came down to “well, if i’ve got to learn a whole new piece of software it might as well be something that can meet my editing needs”. I’m sure much of you felt the same way if you switched. Then I started hearing all the positive things about APP.

As far as the computer goes, I was due for a new one. I’ve been anxiously awaiting a newer Mac Pro. I heard rumblings that a new one will be coming out next year, but honestly, with Apple, who knows? So I got an extremely fast Dell t7600. So far it outperforms my Mac on every level (which is to be expected since my Mac Pro is 3 years old)

So I fondly bid Apple farewell for the time being. I’m keeping my old one to access old material and use as part of Maxon’s NetRender for Cinema 4d. It’s kind of bittersweet, like saying farewell to a friend you like but you know you’ll stay in contact with.

Nicely said. I just made the jump from my 2008 Mac Pro (now doing internet and email duty) to the HP Z820. This has been my experience….

Wow, that’s a longer, much more eloquent version of what I wrote. Great article. I HATE even having to consider switching, I just feel like Apple cares less and less about this market. I’m sure if you looked at their earnings the pro market would be a very slim margin of their whole. I can totally understand why they would do it, financially speaking.
But it still kinda sucks. But I’m sure I’ll forget about it as I stare at Cinema 4d and After Effects tearing through some renders (which I’ve already done)

You may unfortunately start crying when you start using Win 8, and promptly go back to the Apple…

While I love Win 7, Win 8 is a UI nightmare. It was built for tablets and is a complete disaster when it comes to using a mouse. I’ve been trying it for the last couple of weeks, and I cannot stress enough how disappointed I am.

Let’s hope they wake up and make some major changes.

I’m considering a switch as well and am interested to hear about Windows 8. In general, though, how necessary is it to update the Windows OS? Seems like a lot of pros are still using 64 bit XP Professional. What would you potentially be losing by just sticking with Windows 7?

Basically. not until you have to upgrade to a machine with drivers that no longer support Win7. I have a feeling the won’t be for a while.

Isn’t that standard for windows upgrade, every other version?

    Anybody remember Windows ME?

There’s still a white screen with the Me logo permanent stuck in my visual memory.

You know, the one that replaced the desktop after a major crash (weekly), telling you had just made the biggest upgrade mistake in your entire life.

I just finished building my Hackintosh. Best of both worlds! Premiere CS6 is running so smooth on the mac side. Kona 3 works, too.

Until something breaks, I’m a very happy camper.

Yeah, I don’t see anyone in the production business moving to Win8, and there isn’t a reason to do it anyway.

For what it’s worth like Tom I made the switch to an HP Z820 a few months ago. Windows 7 is like a rock, really, haven’t had a crash that I can remember? Editing a major 90 minute doco on Premiere Pro with hundreds of hours of footage. Put it through Prelude first which has been a godsend when used in conjunction with the hover scrub function in Premiere. No more double clicking into the viewer to scrub through a shot. Saving me a lot of time and running smooth as silk. Quite happy. Of course if Apple does come out with a kick ass mac pro won’t be afraid to switch back 🙂
