MacVidCards has Mac EFI Titan and GTX780 finished – makes them into native OSX cards

780 blows 680 out of the water, especially in CUDA area
I will be sending Barefeats a tester unit and he will post independent benchmarks.
I can tell you this, I ran a quick After Effects Ray Trace test from MR and here are some basic numbers that give you an idea:
GTX 480 7:01
GTX 580 6:22
GTX 680 7:08
GTX 770 6:44
GTX 570 6:55
GTX 780 4:37
GTX Titan 4:03In 10.8.4 there is still no OpenCl support but it is present in Betas of 10.9.
I imagine that Resolve numbers will follow similar pattern.
Ideally someone in LA will grab one from me next week and post there independent results.
I have business in Bay area from Sep 1-7 so I will only do a few cards next week and let the word spread before I return from up north. Will get one or both to Barefeats before I go as well.

I have been running 780 from internal power on a 3,1 with Dual Quad 3.2 and in my experience it has weaker PSU than 4,1/5,1.
Tonight I am going to try both cards in 12 Core 5,1 (Dual 3.3 Hex 5680s) and see how internal power holds up.
My feeling is that Titan will require external power unless down clocked and undervolted. The test I use in 3,1 is Furmark for OSX. If a card draws too much power it will shut the entire machine down during the test with a rather loud CLICK from power supply.
I have run it with 780 and it got through to the end. Will be doing some graphics intense stuff tonight. Have to finish 2nd Titan ROM to test card. My “other half” of software team has 1st Titan but he is in St. Petersburg and uses external power in a 3,1 for it.

“Shutdown” is too gentle a term. And I’ve seen people confused by this. To clarify, when you overload your MacPro power supply, it drops dead. As if you’d pulled out the power cord. No warning, no graceful exit. Just rug out from under. If you were committing a write operation to discs at that moment it would almost certainly be an issue. And eventually you could fail components in your box. So let David test this for you. Don’t run a system which exhibits this behavior.

I agree on that with Juan.
Tested out solution is way better than killing your machine.
I have Daves 470 in my box and it still live and well and never bogged down.
This is what you want about your machine if you are serious about it.

I did, it wasn’t fun but it worked.
I ran the 4,1 to 5,1 patch and bought 3 @ 8 GB 1333Mhz RAM sticks
I got the 5680s used on Ebay for $750/each.
Much easier putting a 3690 in a Quad Core, as there is almost no way to mess it up.

That’s a pretty good price. They were lower a few months ago than they are today right? I’m toying with the idea of upgrading my 2012 12 core which only has 2.4s in it. What was the biggest bummer of doing it?

Paul, the biggest drag for me is no problem at all for you, I have a 4,1, so I had to deal with lidless vs lidded CPUs.
For you, having the long handled 3mm wrench and thermal paste is only thing to worry about.
I got an Elkind 3mm wrench for like $8 on Amazon, took 1 day as the tool co was here in CA.
It is literally 100% easier on a real 5,1.
