macpro1,1, are there any suported Graphics Cards?
Posted by Ben Edwards on May 16, 2012 at 11:35 pmHi,
Macpro1,1 and just got Premiere Pro CS6. I have done some goggling and am beginning to feel there are no supported graphics cards, or am I wrong. If not are there any that work?
I am a student so replacing the machine is a bit issue, unless I go the PC route but I still sometimes have to use FCP7.

May 17, 2012 at 3:28 amWe have been running CS5 & CS5.5 in our “B” suite on a 1,1 Mac Pro with a 5770. It doesn’t support hardware accelerated playback but it has worked.
There are hacks to get the OpenCL features/hardware acceleration unlocked, but the jury seems to be out as to whether OpenCL acceleration works better than the Software Playback Engine does.
The Quadro 4000 in our current gen Mac Pro does run circles around it, but if you’re not doing a lot of time-line color correction and effects, we’ve had no trouble with the 5770 in a 1,1.
With the speed enhancements that “native” editing offered us over the applications we were using previously the occasional “render” in that suite doesn’t slow us down.

May 17, 2012 at 9:27 amThanks, I don’t think the Quadro 4000works with macpro1,1 :(.
I think I may have to go back to PC.

May 17, 2012 at 11:25 amI did forget to add that “B” suite was upgraded to CS6 and has been running great and no, the Quadro won’t work in the 1,1.

May 17, 2012 at 4:44 pmCan you even install Lion on the Mac 1,1? I thought Apple crippled the EFI/bootloader for that one, only 32 bit?

May 17, 2012 at 4:56 pmLion, CS6, lots of RAM, SSD OS driver, and it’s the little engine that could… 🙂
It’s the first workstation we’ve owned that has lasted nearly 6 years in daily active duty.

May 17, 2012 at 5:00 pmI have, so I guess so. It maybe because the CPUs have been upgraded to to 3GHz Xeon and someone may of flashed the bios. I have even managed to install a 64Bit version of Windows 7 on it (although I had to remaster the Win7 install disk to get mac to boot it).

May 17, 2012 at 5:57 pmThe 1,1 is a lovely little machine, isn’t it? I’ve even got the original display still working on mine. It will be a sad day when I finally have to put it out to pasture.
Ben, I believe I gave you some advice about altering the OpenCL txt file on another thread? I take it you’ve had no luck? What kind of work do you do? Is GPU acceleration absolutely essential for you? Just because your card doesn’t support hardware acceleration, does NOT mean that Premiere won’t work with it, or even that you can’t edit quite smoothly with software playback alone.
To answer your question directly, the list of officially supported GPUs for hardware acceleration in Premiere can be found here: https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html
For Mac, the only supported cards for Premiere GPU acceleration are the GeForce GTX 285, Quadro 4000, Quadro FX 4800, Radeon HD 6750M, and Radeon 6770M. None of these are supported in the Mac Pro 1,1.
GPU acceleration on the 1,1 is always going to require some kind of hacking, flashing, or other such trickery.

May 17, 2012 at 7:37 pmYes, thanks. In terms of what type of editing I am doing I am planing on making my living as a video editor. I am currently involved in rebutting a feature documentary to TV size. I don’t have much money at the moment and cant afford for my editing system t get in the way of what I am doing so I am going the PC route. I adeda title and it had to render. I have already priced some components (I already have a very nice case and PSU) and it is going to cost me 1/4 the price it would for an entry level mac pro.
At the end of the days computers are just tools, Mac, PC, makes little difference to me. I spend most of the time in application software, mot the OS, and Premiere on PC and Mac is almost the same.

May 18, 2012 at 5:03 pmWith windows installed on the mac pro a newer CS6 supported GPU should work on the machine(in windows), though I wouldn’t spring for a powerhouse card as the PCI-E 1.1 interface will limit it compared to using it on a more modern motherboard that supports pci-e 2.0

May 22, 2012 at 8:04 amThere is one and only 1 MPE supported GPU for Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1.
It is a very fast version of 8800GT with 1Gb of RAM.
I developed it with another vendor and we both sell it on Ebay.
It is not as fast as a GTX285, but it does enable MPE in CS5 and later.
