Im building a machine for Adobe CS3 – Production bundle and now I face the question of video cards.. Can I get by without a Matrox RT-X2 and simply use the video card I install on the mchine? (Or should the the RT-X2 BE the video card? – possible?)

I see thr RT-X2 is great for capturing, but most of that work I do is via firewire… The question is, besides buying an RT-X2, what are my options… thinking of just a high end video card… what to do??

Im also getting into Maya so will/does this impact my decision?

    thanks!

    John,

You can get rid of the RTX2 if you don’t need to do any real-time corrections/editing. The benefit of the Matrox card is that you don’t have to wait for certain tasks to render (ex: real time color correction, transitions etc. ) However, if you have a fast enough system with plenty of memory, the RTX2 doesn’t help that much.

If you plan on using Maya for anything more than the occasional logo, I would suggest an nVidia-based OpenGL card as your display (computer graphics adapter) card. How much to spend depends mostly on how bit your 3D models will be. Architecture: buy the biggest you can. Video production elements: a “low-end” nVidia should be fine. And remember, these cards are _display_ cards, for working with 3D models on screen. They do not help rendering, unless you set up a special production pipeline, with special rendering software.

    Clear as mud?
