Hi there, my MacBook (info/specs below) is suddenly unable to playback video when it’s on a timeline in Premiere (laggy and slow).

I’ve tried to troubleshoot using Google and have even wiped the system and reinstalled everything, including OS, from ground up, but it hasn’t helped.

I’ve been using this system to edit on full-time (freelancer) from 2016 to 2020, when I got my iMac, although I still use it to cut content from time to time and could still do with being able to use it when out on location.

My main question – this system has been absolutely rinsed over the years, used every day and been used to create thousands of videos, from short corporate stuff to 30 minute documentaries. Is it possible for a system to wear out over time? Because right now that’s all I can think has happened.

Nothing else about the system is slow. Web browsing, using Finder, is all as quick as the day I got it.

If anyone could help I’d appreciate it massively.

Are all the files on an external drive?

do any of the files have odd files suffixes?

Try converting any odd files (the ones that don’t play) too a standard codec (mp4)

Do you have preferences set to allocate most memory to premiere and not other applications?

Do you have preferences set to favor performance vs memory?

Hm. Trying to think of other stumbling blocks…

Has the files you are working with change?
Was there an update to the files codec?

    So many factors.

Can you play the video using QT player or VLC without any hiccups?

Thank you for reply on this and sorry for slow getting back to you.

Nothing in my workflow has changed – same kit / camera settings I’ve been using for a few years. Quicktime is fine for playback I believe, I’ll double check later though. It’s just playback in Premiere.

The battery has lost a lot of juice, but other than that the system is in good condition.
