    Hi,

I am just about to buy a new macbook pro…however I have a slight problem…The macbook pro 2,4 ghz 17” standard configuration is available now (I live in slovenia)…if decided to go for the tbo hd display, 7200 rpm and 4gb ram….I would have to wait an additional 2-3 weeks at least….

I need this computer for editing smaller projects…mostly in hdv..prores and dvcpro hd….I owe also a mac pro 2,66ghz desktop which is my main station….

My question is how crucial is the difference in disk speeds…as far as I understand the best is to keep the hd of the macbook pro for projects files and keep media/scratch folder on some external drives…true or false…that way the difference in disk speed doesn’t really mean that much or does it???

concerning software that I use…I mostly intend to work in final cut, motion, photoshop, and basically all final cut studio software…however I will leave the heavy duty rendering for my macpro….and keep the macbook pro for my mobility and editing during holliday and off home base projects…

Internal drive speed matters very little, as it is TRUE, that you will not want to capture your video to the internal drive. That is to store your applications and generic files. You will want an external HD to use as your Scratch Disk.

in my mind the 7200 is overkill,
especially for the extra $$ involved.

i have regularly run 2Hrs of DV off my Powerbook with a 5400rpm drive.

    this is for screenings,
we export a self continued file to the internal, and we’ve never had a problem.

    cheers,

I’ve got a 15″ mbp intel core 2 duo with 5400 rpm drive. 2 GB Ram. I have an extrememly large project (almost 1000 clips, over 30 hours of footage, after effects files, etc.) I run slo mo with most of my clips and am running multiple streams at once (picture in picture stuff). I had been storing all of the media on my external firewire drive. No noticeable slowdowns. However, I ran out of space, so I started using the internal drive to store some of the media files. I’ve got about 40 files there. I’ve noticed that playback and reaction time to the controls have gone down a bit. I’m not going to say categorically that it’s now less responsive due the files on the slower disk, but FCP is definitely slower.
