Mac Pro RAM now available on third party sites
Posted by Walter Biscardi on January 15, 2008 at 1:13 pmJust an FYI for those of you purchasing new Mac Pro systems, I found the proper RAM on http://www.crucial.com now available.
$269 for 4GB vs. $500 through Apple.
I haven’t looked at the other third party sites as I always purchase the RAM through crucial, but I’m betting they either have it already or will shortly. We’re spec’ing out two new Mac Pro systems right now for our Kona 3 systems.

January 15, 2008 at 2:56 pmThanks for the heads up Walter on the ram,,
2 questions,
What monitor card are you spec’ing and why?
Do you think the Kona 3 Card will take full advantage of the new buss or would AJa have a Kona 3b upgrade at NAB?
Next I will have to decide which first, the chicken or the egg….. Mac Pro 3.2 or the HPX500..

The ATI because Color runs much better on ATI than nVidia.

That’s a question for AJA. I honestly have not asked them that yet. I’m looking to simply upgrade both of our suites to the fastest machines available and that’s the 3.2Ghz Mac Pro’s.
Whatever AJA needs to do in the future to take maximum advantage of a system, they will certainly do and we’ll move accordingly when that happens.

No, I just followed their product matrix and ensured that I selected the Mac Pro 8 core.

January 15, 2008 at 4:02 pmWalter, the local Apple “Genius” and Apple’s site says that the NVIDIA 8800GT is the better card for “motion graphics…rendering…”, but it pushes out my order to 5 weeks! If Color is not your main app would you still go with the stock ATI graphics card? I realize that I could always order the card later, but the money is here now and I’d like to get this thing ordered. Besides, I may not have the money later!
Both cards look like they work fine with FCStudio 2, but I’m interested to hear your feedback.

Yep. I have never been a fan of nVidia, the only one I purposely bought was the Ultra 6800.
My thought is that ATI most likely has a new card in development and I would rather have ATI. I will go with the stock ATI card and if they release an updated one in the near future, I will pull the stock card out for the new one.

January 15, 2008 at 4:24 pmThank you for the input! I’m waiting until Steve’s Keynote today as I’m still holding out hope for Blu-Ray in the Mac Pro (not to mention DVDSP)! Only 30 minutes to go…

That’s a long shot, but you never know. MacWorld is usually all about Consumer products, not pro apps and pro features. And it would be strange for them to add Blu-Ray to a product that was just released last week, but you never know what Steve pull out of his sleeve.
