  • Mac Pro or Thunderbolt MacBook Pro for Davinci right now?

I am primarily an Apple Color colorist, relatively new to freelance color grading, and am about to invest in a Davinci Resolve 8 setup. I’m getting the software and a Tangent Wave Panel. I was going to get a Mac Pro, but should I just wait for the Thunderbolt Mac Pro’s? I was thinking instead, to get a 2.5 quad core, Thunderbolt 17″ Macbook Pro with an Apple Thunderbolt Display instead, and getting the new Mac Pro’s whenever they come out. I’m in need of a new computer now, since I have some freelance work already lined up. I know the Macbook Pro wouldn’t playback everything in real time, but it shouldn’t hinder me grading RED footage right? It just wouldn’t be real time playback, right?

Is this a smart move to go with the Thunderbolt Macbook Pro now and wait for the new Thunderbolt Mac Pro’s or should I just go ahead and get the current line of Mac Pro? Thanks.

It’s smart to wait for a windows system.

Nobody really knows when (or if) there will be a new Mac-Pro. I would get the 17″ MBP and then plan on a Windows machine for a desktop Resolve as you will be able to take advantage of the far more powerful GPU options on the PC. The only drawback to the PC resolve is not being able to write ProRes. Apple seems not to care at all about their own “Pro” apps maybe they will see the possible advantage to making a Windows license for Pro-Res available, as it would sell.
