  • Mac Pro no faster with FCP than G5 Quad!!!

I had a chance to use the new mac pro in an apple store with FCP 5.1 and did some rendering tests with DV files.

I rendered a 1 min DV clip with gaussian blur at 50 and got 19 seconds

then I rendered a 25 second clip – 4 layers of it – all at 50% opacity, gaussian blur of 50 on all layers and got 26 seconds

I got home and did the same tests on my G5 quad with FCP 5.04 (7800 card though) and got the same 26 seconds for the 4 layer clip,

and got a bit faster time for the 1 minute single layer clip – 16 seconds.

FCP 5.1 is actually supposed to be a little faster – even on a G5

but I am seeing no improvement going to the Mac pro (granted it was a stock 2.66 unit with 1 gig of ram I think)

I seemed to get alot more RT extreme on my G5 – but this was due to the G5 having a 7800 (a hacked PC version at that!!)

while the Mac Pro had the stock card.

I guess I am keeping my G5 for quite a while.

People are saying OS 10.5 and a new version of
FCP, both at 64 bit will make a larger impact on speed.

I am not suprised as the Quad G5 is no slacker and 5.1 is not optimized for Intel yet. Sodon’t see the MacPro as a *replacement* for a Quad G5. I would only *add* a MP to a workflow at this point. In the spring, I think you start seeing more speed motivation to switch. Once AE and the other Adobe apps are UB you will see a big increase in performance and the FCS team will ahve been able to optimize more.

We already did this thread last week, or maybe the week before that. Apple is going to be releasing FCP 5.1.2 (or is it 5.2.1) which apparently will optimize FCP 5.1 for the Mac Pro. That’s what Apple is using for their benchmarks on the website.

So big shocker, FCP is the same speed on both machines right now. Especially if you use the Mac Pro 2.66 Quad which is essntially the same speed as the G5 Quad.

With regard to that other thread – I rest my case. Gotta find a sucka with a G5 Quad desperate to upgrade to a MacPro. Anyone? Good second hand prices paid!
