Mac Pro Dual GPU Issues
Hi All,
I’ve got a beast of a MacPro and it’s struggling with even basic video. I am trying to determine what my issue may be.
Here are the specs of my machine:
Mac Pro (Late 2013)
Processor: 3.5 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
Memory: 64 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics: Dual AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
Storage: 512 Internal SSD
Single 27″ Apple Display
Adobe CC, latest version of Premiere and AEI’ve run a disk speed test on my ssd and that doesn’t seem to be the issue. I’ve only got a program or two open while in AE or Premiere but nothing that would pull significant system resources. According to iStat, one of my video cards gets decent use while the second doesn’t even seem to be getting used AT ALL.
This machine should be a beast but doesn’t seem to be working properly. It’s definitely not that I am spreading my resources too thin.
Any suggestions on settings that I can dial in or tweak? Is the second video card dead? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don’t know if its still true in CC 2015, but it has been that Premiere Pro only made use of two GPUs during rendering and output to file.

Are you actually doing something that would use GPU processing? Do you have Mercury Playback Engine OpenCL turned on for the project?

Yes, I do have Mercury Playback Engine OpenCL turned on for the project.
Footage is 100MB/s 4K from a Panasonic GH4.

Well I wouldn’t put that in the “basic video”-category. Try transcoding one clip to DNxHR or Prores using the same resolution. See if it’ll run better.

ya that’s not basic that’s cutting/bleeding edge.
Have you tried lowering the playback resolution in the program monitor?
For me to edit 4k smoothly it needs to be bumped down to mid to lowest
setting.What are you playing the 4k footage from? That could be a bottle neck as well.

It’s 4K footage no doubt, but it’s not Red footage nor does it have anything other than basic color correction applied.
I’ve checked the disk speed test on my ssd where everything is housed, as well as the operating system, but that certainly isn’t the bottleneck. I’ve got the program monitor at 1/4 and it will chug along fine for maybe 10 seconds before I start to get dropped frames.

I’ve noticed that using Lumetri for color correction does slow things down,
but the Fast Corrector does not. Though it’s usefulness is limited beyond white balancing/basic shot matching. -

But it’s still compressed 4K that needs to be decompressed in real time if you want it to run nicely. DNxHD and Prores are easier for the CPU to decode.
