  • Mac Mini for AE?

    Hi,
I am going to buy a new Mac and I was looking at both the iMac and the Mac Mini. These two are the ones I can realistically afford. The Mac Mini is $600 cheaper and I already have monitors, keyboard, mouse, so that is not an issue. After Effects is the most intense program I use, but I am also not using it everyday. I mostly use/will be using FCP/Premiere. Will the Mac Mini be able to handle editing or should I go with the iMac? Are the differences worth the price? Here are the basic specs:

    Mac Mini
    2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB Ram
    7200 rpm Hard disk
    AMD Radeon HD 6630M

    iMac
    2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
8GB Ram (with ability to upgrade)
    7200 RPM Hard Disk
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

    Thanks

If you’re wanting to use AE, I would get the quad core processor and add more RAM to it.

There is also the quad-core server Mac Mini
    2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Dual 500GB 7200-rpm hard drives1
    Intel HD Graphics 3000

I know it is a server, but I have heard of people using it as a stand alone computer.

I should clarify that I will only be doing light After Effects work, but that will be the most intense program I will likely use on whatever computer I buy. For the most part I will be editing with FCP 7 and Premiere.
