Loudness meter for adhering to CALM act.
Hey there everyone.
I just wanted to get an idea of what everyone is using to stay with in the specs of the CALM act? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial_Advertisement_Loudness_Mitigation_ActThis is to take effect on 12/13/12, but the network I deal with has started enforcing it now.
What kind of Loudness meter or FCP plug in?
I’ve tried PPMulator XL and it will show me if I’m in spec or not, but I’m not sure how to adjust for loudness. If I raise the audio levels to bring the show up to the -23 LUFS speced by the CALM act then my Db’s are to high.
Any help is appreciated.

Not sure how it’s over there, but over here the dB’s don’t count anymore (don’t clip of course…).
It’s all about perceived loudness. So if you’re at -23 LUFS,
you should be good.Bouke

No good solutions for the NLE world yet. Another FCC problem without a thought as to how to implement it for various situations.

That’s kind of what I’ve seen also and the things that are out are for DAW’s or FCPX.

I have kind of seen the same thing.
We send 2 shows to Lifetime one they have no problem with the other they are constantly complaining about the Loudness.

You need to be metering both loudness and peak levels as you mix. Maximum peaks are still important for international deliverable which is easily handled by decent compressor/ limiter combos.
DAWs like ProTools and Fairlight have the ability to meter properly. FCP doesn’t as they haven’t designed metering for that and you can’t apply a plugin to a track or mix bus. FCP plugins are clip based.
I would never recommend FCP be used for mixing something for broadcast. It just isn’t the right tool.
