lots of duplicate file (clip) names HVX200
Feature doc shot on Panasonic HVX200. Footage imported (FCP 7) through log and transfer, keeping original file names so as to maintain reference to originals. The editor is in mid-stride, and I have just discovered that there are lots of duplicate file names. Out of a total of about 4,000 clips, there are over 300 with the same names. They are always in different reels (rolls), but this is just insane. Sometimes they are only a roll apart. ex, roll 152 and 153 booth have a 00052Y. First of all, I can’t believe the camera created that many duplicates. But more importantly, what are the implications from here. I know this is far from ideal, but will FCP continue to differentiate as long as the rolls are different? Has anyone else run into such a ridiculous problem with this camera or another? If seen a few posts where people have 1 or 2 duplicates, but this is totally different.

The clips name can be changed in L&T and the link is still there, there is this super long ID number that maintains the link, you can automatically add other if to name you see in L&T.

Given that all the media has been ingested, and the edit is in progress, what would you recommend as a course of action? Go through and rename the 300+ duplicate files (this would have to be done twice (assistant and editor). Or can we fairly reliable relink to media as long as the “Matched Nam and Reel Only” is checked.

Do you NEED them renamed or are you just worried about some that might happen and you need to re-transfer the footage in.
If the latter, I would test out Reveal in Finder for a few duplicate clips, see if FCP added a _1 to the duplicate name. If you have to recapture you will be pointing to the folders for the separate cards, which should be the reel name.
So I guess I’m saying to rename if you need to.
