I’ve got a situation here. We have a Decklink-based PPro system that crashes constantly during timeline operations, like trimming clips, or adding transitions. It is fairly unpredictable, but may have some relationship to the trim window function. I say this because on some of the crashes I have just seen the trim window pop up when the crash occurs. The system itself is underpowered, a P4 2.6 processor, 1 gig ram, several sata raid drive systems, and we are using a 720×486 project with uncompressed files. The software is PP 1.5.1 with Decklink 5.5.1 drivers, not the very latest but what we have. I am new to PPro this is my first project on this system with this software. Does anyone have any ideas for things I can change to make this work better?

You might consider giving or selling PPro 1.5 to someone you don’t like, then acquire PPro 2.0 and another gig or two of RAM. Frequent crashing is a feature of 1.5 you got at no additional charge. Apparently Adobe removed the crashing feature (for the most part) from V2, at additional charge.

So there really is no hope to do some minor tweeks- get 2.0 and 2 gig memory (max for this MB). Will I have any trouble upgrading the decklink drivers and PPro 2.0 and preserving the current project? Is there any risk here?

By the way, Bill, do I remember you from the old fast Video Machine Days? or maybe Vidpro?

    Recommended software versions should be:

    DirectX9.0, SP2, Quicktime 6.5 or 7.x and Decklink 5.6

If the issue persists – please send me you system specifications including motherboard make and model to pcsupport@blackmagic-design.com

Bill is correct in saying that 1.5.1 has some limitations however it should not blow apart randomly.

I’m probably not the Bill Buchanan”/Video Machine…” you have in mind. There’s another Bill B in this area that I get accused of being from time to time. Regarding existing projects, you shouldn’t have any trouble upgrading to V2 or with BMD drivers. I had ongoing projects when I made the change. No problems whatsoever. Nevertheless, you should backup your project file(s) before you open them in V2. Good luck.
