    Hi All-
updated FCP (5.1.4) – lost all my “Favorite” effects. Have a back-up of earlier FCP (and whole drive).
Where does OS 10.4.8 hide these? so I can drag them over to the updated version…
    thanks!

    In your preferences.

    Hi Jeremy-
nope! have the “plug-ins” there, which has all my 3rd party stuff, but no “Favorites” folder or items! These seem to be kept somewhere other than in the Plug-In folder.
other suggestions? Or is this a “preferences” folder I am not aware of – the OS seems to have a few of these – i have checked them all that I could find. And if you all could include the “chain” of menus to go thru to get to it
(eg: system>library>preferences…. etc) will make it simpler!
    Thanks
    Stu

Not your plug in folder. There’s not a favorites folder.

It’s stored (written in to) the FCP preferences file which is in your User > Library > Preferences > Final Cut Pro User Data.

As a warning, don’t expect to get them back. Once you trash your prefs, they are gone.

    yup,
there was a big debate about this recently at lafcpug.

given that you can save & load keyboard layout, window layout, column layout, etc.
it’s a bit of a shock to find that you aren’t given a similar option with your faves,
and yet they are so ephemeral that will just disappear completely with a pref dump.

the way to preserve them is to copy/paste all your faves in to a separate “Faves” project.
this is NOT mentioned in the manual,
although i think it does point out that you can store project-specific fave sets within the project itself.

stu, if you had some very specific faves such as precisely tweaked EQs, or motion fx,
you can open old projects, and rescue them from clips they are applied to.
otherwise, you will have to re-build them

    cheers,
    nick

    Huh!
go figure them missing this one!? Nick! Great idea re: old projects, will do that BUT…
WHERE do I save these too?? In other words – in that old project, I copy the applied-to-clip effect and save as a Favorite. OK. So now it is sitting in that project/FCP – BUT: where is it saved to in the OS? User>Lib>Prefs>…? Is it from “there” that I then create a folder somewhere (where?) to save these FX to for future-proofing FCP upgrades? Some clarification of your brilliant plan PUH-lease 🙂

faves are stored in FCP’s preference file.

you cant get inside that to access the faves, or anything else.

i’m suggesting you copy paste your faves into a special “Favorites” project
where you save and store that is u to you.

but back to prefs for a moment:
the common wisdom is that once you establish a set of preferences that you like,
    you back them up,
or use one of the Pref – apps that are out there.

    i prefer FCP Attic

    Thanks AGAIN NIck 🙂
good tips!! Use FCP Rescue as Prefs BU but will try ‘attic’ – thanks for the link to the LA user group too.

[stu aull] “WHERE do I save these too??”

You create a new project and call it something like “Filters and FX.” You drag all your filters, motions, etc.. to this project. Whenever you need a particular look or filter, you open this project.

This is what we do here in the shop and in the case of Good Eats and Assignment Earth, we have specific filter projects just for those shows.

You create your Effect or Motion. You drag this from the “Favorites” folder to the new project. Re-name the Effect whatever you want. Save the Project.

Most folks don’t realize they can have multiple projects open at the same time. We keep this Filters project running at all times while we’re editing and I generally pull it out to its own window so I have access to them at all time.

No actually I much prefer this method. It allows me to save show specific effects to a project associated with that show. I just have the two projects open next to each other at the same time. The episode or timeline I’m working on and the Effects project. Works extrememly well.
